The Haval H6 is magnificent!

The Haval H6 is magnificent!

GWM has been in South Africa for a number of years now with their quality, affordable and distinctive bakkies and double cabs. However, the GWM dealer and service network took some time to get off the ground and had to deal with some teething problems.

The consequence is that GWM, as a brand, is not well-known and not as trusted as the other premium brands. True, the first generation of GWM vehicles were very basic and much of their design, build and performance was far behind their more well-established competitors.

Well, the Chinese, who manufacture GWM, are not ones for lagging in anything, especially production and technology. Their current generation of ships, aircraft, bullet trains, motorbikes and, yes, cars, are now as good as anything produced by other countries around the world.

This technological advancement in motor vehicles is most noticeable in the Haval range - GWM’s premium brand, which arrived on South Africa’s shores earlier this year.

I have since test driven the Haval H1, H2 and now the H6. I have already written about the H1 and H2. Both are remarkable vehicles, but it is the H6, the top of the range Haval, that has impressed me the most.

The H6, in terms of size and performance, competes with the Ford Kuga, Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4, all of which I have test driven this year. Make no mistake, all are really great vehicles and I would be happy to own any one of them, as would most people.

However, the point I want to make here is that the Haval H6 competes with all these vehicles in almost every aspect – driveability, comfort, power, safety and good looks. The big difference is that the price of the Haval H6 starts at R329 900 whereas the others are all about R50 000 to R150 000 more expensive.

When I mentioned to friends, colleagues and acquaintances that I was driving a Haval, their response was almost always negative until I showed them the vehicle, both inside and outside, at which point their attitude changed.

“It’s awesome”, “wow” and “Jeez, this is a really nice car,” where their comments, to name just a few.

My children, after years of experiencing the test driven vehicles, asked me to buy the H6 for us to use. The last time this happened was when I had the pleasure of test driving the Ford Mustang in 2016.

If you’re looking for a new upmarket SUV then you must test drive the Haval H6 before you make your final decision.
