Experienced paddler and life saver Dee Kotze, a The IIE’s Varsity College Port Elizabeth Diploma in Sport Development and Management student, fell in love with paddling through lifesaving and has been participating in paddling for the past 6 years.

Dee has also represented both Kings Beach Lifesaving Club and the Eastern Province.

In 2017 she made the EP team for lifesaving and finished 2nd place when she competed at the University Sport South Africa (USSA) at the Hansa Fish River Canoe Marathon and placed 3rd in the under 23 double at the same event. Says Dee: “Paddling is a diverse sport which allows one to participate in various environments such as rivers, flat water and the ocean.”

Dee is the Sports Life Captain at The IIE’s Varsity College Port Elizabeth campus and has been named the 2017 campus Sports Star. She excelled in her sport as well as academically this year. Academically, Dee was the 2016 Top Achiever for her class and has continued to excel within her studies throughout 2017.

“My passion and enthusiasm for sport along with seeing sport develop in South Africa is what led me to studying the IIE Diploma in Sports Development and Management,” says Dee.

Inspiration and influence are things to be considered to be found almost anywhere or from anyone and when asked Dee shared people, who have influenced her over the years are “anyone that is willing to give their best, regardless of the situation.”

The knowledge that somehow, some way and somewhere the best is yet to come is what Dee lives her life by.

Over the years Dee has received many titles and achievements for both Life Saving and Paddling, which include: Surf-ski at the local lifesaving competitions, placing in the top 3 at the South African Lifesaving Championships as well as taking 1st and 3rd place in the USSA Champs at the Hansa Fish River Canoe Marathon in 2016 and 2015 respectively.

Dee has also participated in races such as the Dusi Canoe Marathon, Pete Marlin Surf Ski, the Cape Point Challenge, the Breede Canoe Marathon and the Sundays River Breakfast Series.

After graduating this year Dee plans to take a break from the books and explore career opportunities overseas.
