The Mahindra XUV 300 is WOW!

The Mahindra XUV 300 is WOW!

Port Elizabeth - It’s not often that one’s expectations are exceeded, but the Mahindra XUV 300 surprised me in its features, build quality and performance.

Like most South Africans I have had little experience with cars originating from India. The first batch of Indian cars coming to South Africa didn’t meet with great reports.

But neither did Toyota or Hyundai when they first arrived. It took some time to build trust and for customers to adjust to these Eastern offerings.

Well, Mahindra has come of age with the XUV 300. This is a huge step up from the practical and simple Mahindras that we first met. The XUV 300 can face any of its Crossover contemporaries with confidence.

Mahindra XUV 300 specifications and features

When I was told that I would be test driving the XUV 300 I had no idea what it was and when I rounded the corner and was shown the car, I knew that I was in for a great experience.

I thought the XUV 300, with its neat styling, alloy rims and sporty stance looked good from the outside but it was the interior that was really appealing. Ergonomic and comfortable, it also has more features than the Starship Enterprise.

One can expect all the usual accoutrements of a modern car – Bluetooth (but with smart watch and phone Bluesense connectivity), infotainment system, steering wheel controls, aircon etc. However, the XUV 300 goes a little further with an electric sunroof, keyless ignition, cruise control, ecosense tech and a smart steering system as standard.

In many respects the XUV is ground breaking – not just for Mahindra but for SUV’s in general. It would seem that Mahindra looked at the Crossover market and decided to be the best in each aspect. From front parking sensors, to tyre positioning displays to park assist, the XUV 300 is either class leading or first in its class.

Drive performance

I am certainly not the first auto journo to notice the massive leap forward that Mahindra have made in the XUV 300. The drive quality, solidity and comfort of this Crossover is really good. The seats are very comfortable and have six way adjustability, the steering is instant and solid and the dual zone temperature control makes the XUV a real pleasure to drive.

There are two engine options – 1500 cc Turbo Diesel or 1200 cc Turbo Petrol. The diesel produces just over 85 kW of power and 300Nm of torque and the petrol, 81 kW and 200Nm. Both come with a six speed manual gearbox. There are disc brakes all round.

A quality drive

I test drove the diesel and was impressed by its performance. A smooth ride with ample power. Whether in town or on the open road, this car performed very well. The gear ratios are great and I particularly enjoyed the first gear. Mahindra literally want the XUV 300 to be first off the mark!

I couldn’t help but smile while driving this car. There were an endless supply of surprises and I found that the XUV met every question I posed with a “oh, that’s easy” attitude.

Well done Mahindra, I can’t wait to see your next offering.
