The Shire Eco Lodge offers a unique luxury chalet experience in a magnificent setting

With its montane grasslands, lush indigenous forests, fine weather, natural rivers and gushing waterfalls, it is obvious why the Stutterheim area was contentious during the Cape Frontier Wars.

However, the canons and war-cries have been quiet for decades and it’s forest hiking trails, picnic sites, variety of fresh water fishing opportunities, abseiling, skiing, mountain biking, horse rides, bird-watching and the search for absolute serenity that brings many out of the big cities to the area.

Many of these visitors have certainly found themselves admiring the several oddly-shaped luxury chalets dotted on the edge of the Xholora Forest, on the slopes of the Amathole Mountains.

Inspired by the home of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins in JRR Tolkien’s fictional Middle-earth, The Shire Eco Lodge sums up innovative design in a magnificent setting and is the perfect getaway destination for thrill-seekers, nature lovers and families.

Each elegant, open-plan chalet contains a stylish en-suite bathroom and fully-equipped kitchenette, as well as its own braai facilities. True to their desire to build a unique eco-friendly getaway experience, the owners furnished the chalets with King or Queen-size beds as well as bedside tables, suitcase stands, mirror frames and cupboards handcrafted from invasive Australian blue gum and black wattle so as to conserve the indigenous trees.

The unusual, curved windows in the chalets allows for great vistas of the natural surroundings

For the more adventurous, they have two river-side chalets with open bush showers - just keep an eye out for the rare Samango monkeys in the treetops!

If you’re not in the mood to cook, The Shire will prepare organic meals upon request – this is a special request and must be pre-booked, or you can dine at one of Stutterheim’s nearby restaurants. Actually, it’s this proximity that makes the place a good base even for travelling business executives.

The Shire also maintains a superb campsite alongside the forest, which has 16 camping spots - each with its own electricity and water points. A unisex ablution block, situated in the middle of the campsite, has additional dish washing facilities.
