These areas are scheduled for waste collection on Thursday

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality on Wednesday announced that its contingency plan to collect waste during the municipal strike is now in operation.

The strike, which commenced on Thursday last week with the municipality's largest union, South African Municipal Workers' Union (SAMWU), downed tools, and deliverying their demands at the City Hall on Friday, has seen refuse not being collected across the City.

On Monday, another union, the Independent Municipal and Allied Trade Union (IMATU), also downed tools.

On Tuesday, the Metro warned residents to stay away from its Customer Care Centres after receiving reports of intimidation.

According to Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Media Management Officer, Kupido Baron, the following areas will be serviced on Thursday: Sherwood, Ben Kamma, Kragga Kamma, Weighbridge Park, Lorraine, Woodlands, Kamma Park, Kamma Heights, Framesby, Sunridge Park, Framesby, Framesby Gardens, Framesby Extension, Vergelegen, Fernglen, Cotsworld Extension, Beverley Gardens and Beverley Groove.

"Please note that while we try our best to provide services, a slight chance exist that we might not pick up waste in all mentioned areas due to volatility of the ongoing industrial action," he said.

"In such cases, please take your waste to landfill sites or drop-off sites or keep your waste until our normal services resume."
