This weekend's aQuelle Ocean Racing Series heats up

Port Elizabeth’s one of a kind beach event is heading into the home stretch and the competition is getting fierce.

The aQuelle Ocean Racing Series continues with race day eight on Sunday the 3rd of February. With seven races already behind us the favourites for the season long overall categories are now becoming clear.

In the 2km swim, brother and sister combo Paige and Slater Black are looking good to win their respective divisions with both winning every race they have participated in so far.

Paige takes a 30-point lead into the final three races while Slater will have to make up 25 points on Keegan Cooke due to missing round five.

In the Ladies 3km swim Liza Kingston leads from Amica de Jager in second and Natalie Hagedorn-Hansen in third. It will be a tough battle for first considering de Jager is also unbeaten in the 3km when she has competed.

In the Men’s 3km it is a three-way shootout for series title. Chris Mowbray, Kevin Richards and Heinrich Vorster occupy first, second and third respectively and are separated by only 15 points.

Ocean Racing Series Prize Giving will be held in April

All have traded places on the podium during the series making it by far the most competitive swim category.

In addition to the overall category for each event there are also age group prizes worth fighting for. This gives everyone an opportunity to compete no matter their age.

Age group winners all get invited to the Ocean Racing Series Prize Giving which will be held at Newscafe on the 1st of April.

Event organiser, Michael Zoetmulder said, “Apart from round three, where the race day was cancelled, the Port Elizabeth summer weather has produced stunning open water swimming and overall family beach conditions”.

He added “With the amazing atmosphere created by the competition heading into its final stages, the last three races are ones to look forward to for competitors and spectators alike and we expect an excellent attendance at Hobie Beach on Sunday”
