Three arrested at protest in Port Elizabeth, motorists warned to stay away

Port Elizabeth - Port Elizabeth police arrested three people after protesters in the Kuyga area of Port Elizabeth barricaded Mission Road with burning tyres and stones from 04:00 on Monday morning.

"Public Order Policing, Metro police and members from SAPS Kabega Park have been deployed in the areas of Cape Road, Greenbushes and Mission Road," described police spokesperson, Capt Sandra Janse van Rensburg.

"Three males, aged between 18 and 25 years old, were arrested and detained under the Criminal Matters Amendment Act."

She said that Public Order Policing will remain in the area to monitor the situation.

"It is alleged that the protest is regarding service delivery," Capt Janse van Rensburg said.

"Police are warning the community that although they have the right to protest, they should do so within the ambit of the law and not cause damages to infrastructure and blocking the roads."

The arrested will appear at the St Albans Court on Tuesday.

"Motorists are advised to use alternative routes."
