Three Eastern Cape ward by-elections scheduled for Wednesday

East London - Twenty-seven municipal ward by-elections will take place in eight provinces except the Western Cape on Wednesday. Three of these will happen in the Eastern Cape at the Makana Local Municipality, the Mnquma Local Municipality and the Enoch Mgijima Municipality.

In total, the by-elections will be contested by hundred and five (105) candidates from fifteen (15) political parties and five (5) independent candidates nationwide. 

The details of the by-elections are as follows:

Eastern Cape by-elections:

  • Ward 12 in Makana Municipality – EC104

    will be contested by three (3) candidates, Mzobanzi Nkwentsha from the African National Congress (ANC), Angela Peta Jones from the Democratic Alliance (DA) and Simphiwe Mbonda from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).

The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 39.82% and the DA candidate won the ward with 67.68% of valid votes.

  • Ward 21 in Mnquma Municipality – EC122

    will be contested by three (3) candidates, Goodman Tandikaya Ntshonga from the ANC, Nosipo Ellenjan Ntloko from the Congress of the People (COPE) and Nokubonga Sompali from the EFF.

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s death.

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 52.80% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 52.80% of valid votes.

  • Ward 10 in Enoch Mgijima Municipality – EC139

    will be contested by three (3) candidates, Anele Hala from the ANC, Hermanus Albertus Deysel from the DA and Siyabonga Anderson Magibile from the EFF.

The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 58.98% and the DA candidate won the ward with 60.57% of valid votes. Note that the voting stations’ in this ward will close earlier and will be open from 7 am to 7 pm.
