Three expected in court over Port Elizabeth business robbery

Three suspects are expected in court after they were arrested just two hours after a Port Elizabeth business robbery was reported along the Old Grahamstown Road, in Deal Party, by Bethelsdorp police.

“These members from Bethelsdorp are constantly busy with crime prevention in the area and being alert and aware of suspicious behaviour is second nature to them,” said police spokesperson, Capt Sandra Janse Van Rensburg.

“While patrolling and visiting shops in the Bethelsdorp area, they noticed two suspects, who entered a shop on Brass and Scholtz Street, Bloemendal.

“When they made enquiries with regard to these two suspects, they were told that the suspects came from a truck that was parked around the corner.”

She said that the members went to investigate, and before they could question the occupants of the truck, three suspects fled in the direction of William Slammert Street.

“The members chased the suspects and managed to arrest three suspects, aged between 27 and 28,” said Capt Janse Van Rensburg.

“Upon further investigation, the members establish that the truck was taken at a business robbery in Old Grahamstown Road, Deal Party.

“The suspects were busy off-loading the truck that had food items.”

She said that it is alleged that on Sunday, at about 12:00, four suspects held up the employees at a warehouse and locked them in the back of a truck and also took four cellphones the workers.

“The suspects then loaded another truck with food items and fled from the scene.”

However, one employee managed to contact the warehouse manager, who arranged a response from a security company and the South African Police Service.

“All three suspects were arrested on charges of Possession of Suspected Stolen Property. The members recovered four pallets in the truck and approximately three pallets that was already off loaded,” said Capt Janse Van Rensburg.

“The suspects will appear in court during the week.”

Mount Road SAPS Cluster, Maj Gen Thembisile Patekile, welcomed the arrest and commended the members on their vigilance.
