Three more suspects arrested in Bedford stock theft case

Cradock - The Cradock Stock Theft Unit continues with their operation 'vat alles' where they continue to add up the number of suspects arrested for stock theft in the cluster.

"Two male suspects, aged between 39 and 48 years, were arrested at Bedford on Tuesday," said police spokesperson, Captain Khaya Tonjeni.

"This arrest is in connection to a recent case of stock theft that was opened on 13 November 2019.

"One more suspect is outstanding and the detectives are closing in.

"Another arrest is eminent."

The two suspects are expected to appear at the Bedford Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

Early this month, six suspects, aged between 25 -38, were arrested and charged for stock theft after being found with six sheep carcasses and with extra pieces of meat in plastic bags with an estimated value of R45 440.00 at Bedford.

Police then said that three suspects were still at large and could not be found as they had fled away, but detectives were following up oon leads.

The arrests followed after 25 sheep were reported stolen at a local farm at Bedford and were discovered to have been slaughtered near the Auction grounds.

"At the crime scene at least twenty one sheep hides were discovered with their heads, hooves and intestines," said Capt Tonkeni then.

Eastern Cape SAPS Provincial Commissioner Lt Gen Liziwe Ntshinga was very pleased with the breakthrough and arrest.

"These continous arrests are a reward for your efforts and commitment in the eradication of stock theft. The arrest are rewarding considering the time, effort in the fight against crime that has a potential to negatively affect our national economy," said Lt Gen Ntshinga.
