Three pit bulls impounded by police after Port Elizabeth man mauled to death

Port Elizabeth - Gelvandale police have opened an inquest docket for investigation after the body of a 48-year-old man was found with multiple dog bites in Armstrong Street, Malabar, Port Elizabeth.

"It is alleged that on Friday, at about 07:00, SAPS Gelvandale responded to a complaint of a body lying in Armstrong Street, Malabar," said police spokesperson, Capt Sandra Janse Van Rensburg.

"On arrival, the members noticed that the deceased Melvin Stuurman had multiple bite wounds on the face.

"At this stage, circumstances surrounding the attack and subsequent death is unclear."

She said that however, while police were still processing the crime scene, they followed up on information of a woman washing dogs in Malabar, not far from the crime scene.

"Port Elizabeth Animal Anti Cruelty League was roped in to assist and the three pitbulls found on the premises were removed pending the investigation."

Capt Janse Van Rensburg said a post-mortem will be done to determine cause of death.
