Three probably shot dead before being burnt in Umlazi, suspects on the run

The KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa condemned the brutal killing of three people at Umlazi D section.

“It is very disturbing to find people being killed so brutally and we call on the community to stand up and condemn this violent behaviour. Seasoned detectives have been tasked to investigate the murders. We are also appealing to anyone who may have information with regards to the identity of the suspects to contact the local police station or Crime Stop on 08600 10111,” he said.

According to police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane, just before midnight an informal dwelling was set alight and three people, who were inside the home were burnt beyond recognition at D section in Umlazi.

"Police officers from Umlazi were conducting operations in the vicinity when they heard gunshots. The police officers immediately responded and spotted a group of men fleeing from the direction of the gunshots," he added.

"It is alleged that the suspects opened fire at the police officers. The suspects managed to escape and are still at large.

"Police then discovered the dwelling that was on fire in the same vicinity. Three people, who were inside the abode were found dead.

"Three counts of murder and arson were opened at Umlazi police station.  The motive for the attack is still being investigated."

Lieutenant Colonel Zwane said that in another separate incident on Tuesday, at Coveway, Mthwalume, four family members, aged between nine 9 and 73 years old, died after their house was allegedly set alight.

"Four counts of murder and arson were opened at Hibberdene police station for investigation and detectives are pursuing positive leads at this stage."
