Two free-standing ATM machines were damaged by unknown suspects in Khama Street, Ikamvelihle, in Port Elizabeth, on Thursday morning, just before 02:00.

"One of the machines started to burn from the inside and the suspects left the scene without getting access to the cash money," described police spokesperson, Captain Andre Beetge.

"When police, security and the fire department responded to the scene, the fire was extinguished."

He said that a case of malicious damage to property was opened.
