Tip-off leads to seizure of illegal firearm and arrest in Uitenhage

Uitenhage -  Police in Uitenhage arrested a 19-year-old man for the possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition, after receiving information from a local resident. The recovered firearm had eight live rounds of ammunition.

"On Monday, at around 03:50am, it is alleged that Uitenhage police received information that either a driver or passengers of a black VW Polo with a specified registration number was carrying a firearm," said police spokesperson, Sergeant Majola Nkohli.

"Moments later, police spotted the same vehicle in Caledon Street, Uitenhage, and pulled it off the road.

"On searching the vehicle and occupants, police found an unlicensed firearm from the driver.

"The seized firearm was a Norinco with eight live rounds of ammunition."

Sgt Nkohli said that a preliminary investigation has revealed that a firearm was stolen in Makhanda (fromerly Grahamstown) in March 2019.

Acting Uitenhage SAPS Cluster Commander, Brigadier Ronald Koll, commended members for their swift response to the information.

"Police would like to encourage residents to continue with their good acts of sharing information about criminal activities in their areas."
