With the recent ABSA Premiership transfer window having been completed, and the 2017/18 PSL season folding over and having commenced on the 18th of August, it could be interesting to determine who the most valuable players in the league are – especially with the new season in its infancy.

Herewith is a description of the top 20 players currently in the league, based on their market values, in the case of transfers. With the transfer window now behind us, the stand-point to which players hold the most value, and from which clubs, can deem for interesting interpretation for future team establishments.

What was telling is that only seven clubs out of the total 16 PSL sides, have managed to crack representative players into the top 20 most valuable players. 10 players of the 20, belong to the two big-name clubs, namely Mamelodi Sundowns and Bidvest Wits, lending over five players each.

Soweto club giants, Kaizer Chiefs, contribute four players, while rivals, Orlando Pirates, slot in just one player. SuperSport United and Cape Town City each have two players, while Ajax Cape Town has one player in the overall top 20.

The most valuable player overall in the current 2017/18 ABSA Premiership league, being Zimbabwean/South African-born Sundowns’ striker, Khama Billiat, worth an astonishing €1.85-million market value – miles above the rest.

Based on the other field positions, the most valuable back player being Sundowns’ Anele Ngcongca worth €1.5-million – Ngcongca dropped from a strapping value of €2.5-million in 2016/17.

On the wings both Wits’ Steven Pienaar and Cape Town City’s Ayanda Patosi top it, each worth €1-million.

The most valuable centres being another two-way tie between the Chiefs’ Eric Mathoho and SuperSport’s Jeremy Brockie, worth €950 000 each. New Zealand-born Brockie is also the most valuable foreigner competing in the league.

There is also a tie in the goal-keepers, between Darren Keet (Wits) and Itumeleng Khune (Chiefs), both valued at €850 000. Locally, Chippa United’s most valuable player being Nigerian-born and keeper, Daniel Akpeyi worth €450 000 market value.

Mamelodi Sundowns also top the charts with most team market value of €17.1-million, with Bidvest Wits at second, worth €12.48-million.
