Transnet's unique port initiative brings Christmas cheer to PE charities

The People’s Port brought smiles to the faces of many less fortunate children in a unique way this festive season. The #ToysForCharity Fishing Day was not only the Port of Port Elizabeth’s Christmas charity drive, but also an initiative to bring the city’s people back into a working port environment.

This partnership with the community generated more than 230 toys, which were handed over to four different charity organisations yesterday. They are the Inn Safe Hands in Schauderville, the Aurora Special Care Centre in Walmer Downs, Sinako – We Can in Newton Park and the Eastern Province Child & Youth Care Centre in Glendiningvale.

Port invites community

The port invited the community to participate in this event on the Charl Malan Quay on Saturday, 9 December, through various tackle shops in town. The key condition for participation in this ideal fishing opportunity was the donation of toys to the value of at least R100. People had to hand these in at the tackle shops. Their cash slips served as the admission fee in exchange for entrance tickets issued at the shops.

Safe and pleasant for all

Other rules applied to make it a safe and pleasant experience for all, such as a ban on alcohol and drugs, only charcoal braais were allowed on own braai stands, fishing permits were compulsory and a maximum of 300 participants were allowed on a first-come-first-served basis.

People’s Port vision

“This is in line with our vision of creating a Smart People’s Port. We plan to host more events like these including open days, visiting navy vessels, fun runs and our anchor event, the port festival. This will enable us to create a friendly environment in which we can engage not only with the people of our city and local communities, but also with national and international tourists,” said Rajesh Dana, Port Manager. “

More information

Participants could access more information via the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) Facebook page. The PE tackle shops who assisted with the logistics of this event include Trophy Tackle Den, Hook, Line & Sinker, Commercial Marine and Extreme Marine in Uitenhage.
