Mthatha - Eastern Cape Department of Transport MEC, Weziwe Tikana, is in the O.R. Tambo District Municipality, this time to introduce a contractor which has been appointed to implement phase one of the R61 upgrade from St Barnabas Hospital to Hluleka Nature Reserve.

MEC Tikana had during the tabling of the 2019/20 policy speech announced plans to outsource the construction of the first phase of this project which constitutes 16km of the 48km road.

“We are delighted that we have now reached this level in this project. We will on Tuesday brief communities on the developments and to seek their support and cooperation for the smooth implementation of this project,” said Tikana.

Implementation for the R205 million project is scheduled for a period of 24 months from November 2019. This project will also see the implementation of governments Local Economic Development policy as it will also benefit local contractors and 100% of the unskilled labour will be sourced from the local community members.

“We want to assure our communities that we are committed to changing lives as well as the face of transport infrastructure in the province and this is another major step towards building the Eastern Cape we want,” said Tikana.

The MEC has called for communities to exercise patience as government is at work to address their needs and also jealously guard the government infrastructure.
