Trio arrested after attacking police officers, who responded to a tavern fight

A 33-year-old police Constable sustained an open wound on the head after a beer bottle was thrown at him by one of the tavern patrons while he and other members were were responding to a complaint of fighting over the weekend.

"The incident happened near Barumba Tavern - which was already closed at the time, at Ngqeleni village on Sunday morning, at about 01:30," described police spokesperson, Captain Khaya Tonjeni.

"Three suspects, aged between 25 and 33 years, have been arrested one of whom sustained injuries apparently as a result of the altercation with the members as they were defending themselves from the attack.

"The member was immediately rushed to the doctor with some broken pieces of the beer bottle found his head."

Capt Tonjeni said that the said suspect is under police guard at Canzibe Hospital in Ngqeleni.

"A case docket has been opened under attack on police regarding the incident. The other two suspects are detained in Ngqeleni police cells and will appear before Ngqeleni Magistrate's Court on Monday."

The Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Liziwe Ntshinga welcomed the news of the speedy arrest and wished the injured member a speedy recovery.

"As we celebrate National Police Commemoration Day we are pleased to find that our members are standing firm against those attacking the community and the state by attacking the police. The police are under constant attack and this means we need to be alert on duty, cautious and put our protection gear. We will defend our community whatever the cost," said the Provincial Commissioner.
