Trio expected in court after PE Flying Squad intercept armed gangsters

Three suspects, aged between 25 and 34 years old, are expected in court on Monday after they were arrested for illegal firearm possession by Port Elizabeth police.

According to police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, on Thursday, at about 19:50, the PE Flying Squad members received information that a shooting may possibly take place in the Marikana area of Bethelsdorp.

"While patrolling the area incessantly, the members spotted a suspicious white Nissan NP300 speeding past them.

"The members gave chase and succeeded in stopping the vehicle," she described.

"On searching the vehicle, a .38 revolver and ammunition as well as a modified gas gun was found in the vehicle.

"Three suspects aged, 25, 28 and 34 years old was arrested and detained on a charge of illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition."

Col Naidu said that the 25-year-old suspect is a known gang affiliate while the gang affiliation of the other two is unknown at this stage.

The suspects will appear in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate's Court on Monday.

"Our Back to Basics on enhanced police visibility and the immediate following up on any information received either voluntarily or anonymously is certain to yield positive results," Col Naidu said.

"Through teamwork , coordinated efforts and swift reaction we, the SAPS will succeed in apprehending criminals."
