Tsomo man jailed for 15 years for raping teenage niece

Tsomo Regional Magistrate's Court on Wednesday sentenced a 57-year-old man to undergo 15 years imprisonment for raping his 13-year-old niece last year.

"It is alleged that the accused raped the victim on 27 December 2016, at about 18:20, at Gcina Village, Ngqamakhwe," said police spokesperson, Capt Jackson Manatha.

"He pushed the door where the victim was alone as his wife was away at the time.

"He raped his niece, who broke the silence later."

Captain Manatha said that the case was properly investigated by Butterworth Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS). Butterworth FCS Unit traced and arrested the accused.

"The accused cannot be named to protect the identity of the victim who is his relative," he added.

Captain Manatha said that the Eastern Cape Police has welcomed the sentence and we trust that the lengthy sentence will serve as a deterrent to criminals preying on elderly women who are not in a position to defend themselves.

"Violence committed against women and children is in the fore front of our fight against crime and offenders can expect that our investigators will pursue every avenue to ensure conviction."
