Tsomo man jailed for 20 years for killing his 81-year-old grandmother over cow dung

The Tsomo Regional Magistrate's Court on Tuesday sentenced a 29-year-old man, Sandiso Matse, to 20 years behind bars for the murder of his 81-year-old grandmother, Nolast Matse, two years ago.

"It is alleged that the deceased asked the accused why he was using her dry cow dung (amalongwe). The accused became angry and stabbed his grandmother to death," said police spokesperson, Capt Jackson Manatha.

"The murder was committed on 14 May 2015 at about 07:30 at Ndaba Locality, Nqancule Village, Ngqamakhwe."

Eastern Cape police has welcomed the sentence and we trust that the lengthy sentence will serve as a deterrent to criminals preying on elderly women, who are not in a position to defend themselves.

"Violence committed against women and children is in the fore front of our fight against crime and offenders can expect that our investigators will pursue every avenue to ensure conviction."
