Tumultuous results for Selborne cricket derby against St. Andrews

Selborne College played nine inter-schools cricket derbies against St. Andrews College on Saturday, 21st January, and there was much to showcase for future cricketing prowess amongst the two prestigious schools from East London and Grahamstown respectively.

The teams that paired up against each other were: U14B, U14A, U15B, U15A and the 1st XI to the 5th XI sides – with Selborne acclaiming victories in four of those nine match-ups. However, the most imperative of those encounters being the 1st XI team showdown – which Selborne won by six wickets.

St. Andrews took to the crease first and scored a submissive total of 160 all out, with Selborne breezing in their chase with just the loss of four wickets. M. Dewar and D. Deetlefs both partnered in their conclusive chase, as they scored an unbeaten 57 and 34 respectively.

With the ball, J.P. De Bruin (3/31) and J. Raubenheimer (3/41) contributed the most in slandering St. Andrews to their meek total.

The 2nd XI match-up, however, appeared to be a complete reversible affair, as Selborne lost by 175 runs. St. Andrews batted first and totalled 276/5, with the East London side falling way short on 101 all out. E. Boucher scored 35 and C. Kleber 23 not out.

In the junior ranks, Selborne won the U15A bout by 88 runs, when they got St. Andrews all out for just 85 – less than half their score of 174 all out. The top five batters for Selborne all had scores in the 20’s, respectively: R. Evans 28, J. Jacobs 28, A. Richards 23, R. Rowe 21 and C. Kretzmann 20.

In their exceptional collective bowling effort, the stand-out was A. Richards, who achieved 5/19 bowling figures.

St. Andrews managed to win the U14A contest by 52 runs, as again both sides were all out, with St. Andrews heeding on 168 and Selborne 116.

Unfortunately for Selborne, the batting line-up could not collaborate as a collective with two of their batsmen scoring 92 of the team’s 116 runs in the form of A. du Plessis (52) and G. Bishop (40). D. Standing (4/43) and S. Mlibo (2/18) provided the best contribution in their side’s bowling spell.
