Two Cadet firefighters graduate from Academy

On Friday, 1 September, two cadet firefighters of Overstrand Fire & Rescue graduated from the Cape Winelands District Municipality Fire Service Academy.

Cadet firefighters Erl Gelant and Simphiwe Joja enrolled for the Firefighter 1 course in order to obtain their NFPA 1001 qualification, which consists of three courses, namely Firefighter 1, Hazmat Awareness and First Aid Level 3. Firefighter 1 is a twelve-week commitment with learners undergoing rigorous training exercises on a daily basis. This is the entry level for professional firefighters.

Overstrand Fire Chief Lester Smith said the two cadets have worked really hard and their achievements are well deserved.  “Irrespective of whether fires are regarded as natural, planned or unwanted, there is a need to ensure safety and to reduce risk. We rely heavily on our training in fire situations and we remain committed to providing the best service we can, with resources available to us,” he added.
