Two municipal ward by-elections scheduled for the Eastern Cape
Two municipal ward by-elections will take place in the Eastern Cape province on Wednesday, 8 August 2018.
The by-elections will be contested by nine candidates from seven political parties.
In the Mbashe Local Municipality, a by-election will be held for the municipality's Ward 29 and will be contested by Philile Mayiji of the African National Congress (ANC); Kholiwe Dyomfana of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF); Nomandla Tshandana of the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania (PAC); and Nothando Manqata of the United Democratic Movement (UDM).
According to the IEC, the ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.
"The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 61.83% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 66.62% of valid votes."
Another by-election will take place in the Walter Sisulu Local Municipality for its Ward 3. This will be contested by Sivuyile Mnikina of the ANC; Khanyisa Sidney September of the African Transformation Movement (ATM); Matthee Der Ridder Nel of the Democratic Alliance (DA); Bongile David Xamlashe of the EFF; and Tshepiso Enerst Nodwele of the Maletswai Civic Association (MCA).
"The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor," the IEC said.
"The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 58.14% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 53.43% of valid votes."
