Two teenage initiates die in freak hut fire - 13 others in hospital with serious burns

The start of this winter's traditional male initiation season claimed two lives over the weekend after two initiates, aged 18 and 19 years, were burnt to death in a hut.

According to Mthatha police spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela, the two died after their initiation school hut caught fire in the early hours of Sunday morning at Ntabazigogo village, outside Qumbu.

“The hut was full of 25 initiates when it caught fire, and the two victims were last in the queue as they escaped through a small door after the fire broke out,” described Lt-Colonel Fatyela.

He added that 13 initiates were seriously burnt in the fire and required intensive treatment. They were referred to hospitals in Mthatha, while the rest were treated in Qumbu.

Police are investigating the cause of the fire.
