Two Uitenhage sides qualify for Grand Challenge club rugby semi-finals

Uitenhage showed to be a winning showground over the weekend for the EPRU Grand Challenge quarter-finals, as both respective hosts, Gardens Rugby Club and Progress won their respective matches.

Gardens picked off Humansdorp’s Kruisfontein United 41-13 at Rosedale on Saturday, to record their 15 successive unbeaten run in the Grand Challenge to date.

Just two weeks ago, Gardens edged the same side just 17-12, so the front-running Uitenhage club did well to ascertain their dominance as the knock-out phase unravels.

Parks Rugby Club, who were the second-seeded quarter-finalist, beat Star of Hope 35-23 at Londt Park on Saturday, and will meet the PE Harlequins at Londt Park this coming Saturday in their semi-final clash.

The PE Harlequins booked their semi-final spot, when they travelled to Despatch and upset Despatch Rugby Club 36-26 on Saturday.

The other semi-final will see an all-Uitenhage clash between hosts Gardens and Progress, who managed to topple PE Police 38-20 in their quarter-final.

PE Police deemed very underwhelming this season, after having taken the club reigns last season to represent Eastern Province in the National Gold Cup club rugby competition. They reached the Gold Cup quarter-finals before getting knocked out.

All Grand Challenge quarter-final results:

Despatch 26-36 PE Harlequins

Gardens 41-13 Kruisfontein United

Parks 35-23 Star of Hope

Progress 38-20 PE Police

Semi-final fixtures on Saturday:

15:30 Gardens vs Progress at Rosedale

15:30 Parks vs PE Harlequins at Londt Park
