Two Willowvale men arrested for allegedly killing elderly man

Willowvale police on Thursday arrested two men, aged 22 and 29, for alleged murder of a 74-year-old man.

"It is alleged that the 74-year-old man was last seen on Wednesday, at about 20h00, at Tywaka Locality, Fort Malan Village, Willowvale, after having dinner," said police spokesperson, Capt Jackson Manatha.

"He went to sleep in his bedroom and his sister went to sleep in her bedroom."

Capt Manatha said that on Thursday morning, the sister of the 74-year-old man went to his room to serve him with tea.

"She knocked at the door, but there was no response.

"She became suspicious and called neighbours, who forced the door open," he described.

"The 74-year-old was found dead in his room."

Capt Manatha said that the deceased did not have visible injuries and police believe he was strangled to death.

"The murder case was reported to Willowvale police, who acted swiftly with the assistance of the community and arrested two suspects," he added.

"The two suspects were arrested and will be charged for murder. Both suspects are also from the same village."

Capt Manatha said that the motive behind the murder of the old man is not yet clear at this point in time.

Butterworth Cluster Commander, Brigadier Ngangema Xakavu, condemned the murder of the old man.

He praised the Willowvale police for their swift action in tracing and arresting the suspects.

He also thanked community for their assistance in assisting the police.

"The identity of the deceased will be withheld until all his relatives are officially informed about his death."

Meanwhile, the two suspects will appear before the Willowvale Magistrate's Court soon on a murder charge.
