Two years in jail for man convicted of brutally assaulting girlfriend

The Butterworth Magistrate's Court on Friday sentenced a 20-year-old man to two years for assaulting his girlfriend with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

"Lungani Beyi, the accused, was sentenced to undergo two years imprisonment on 19 July 2018," said spokesperson, Captain Jackson Manatha.

"The girlfriend is a 19-year-old woman.

"He was accused of having  affair with another man by her boyfriend (accused)."

Butterworth Cluster Commander, Brigadier Ngangema Xakavu, has welcomed the sentence as it will deter some other young men of violence against women.

"The accused was has been in custody since his arrest as he was not granted bail."
