Uitenhage man jailed for eight years for 2017 rape

Uitenhage police welcomed the sentence handed to rapist, 37-year-old Riaan Hendrickse, after he was convicted by the court for raping a 21-year-old woman early on the morning of 25 November 2017 in Kamesh.

"The victim went with the accused to his residence to meet her boyfriend. The boyfriend was not at the residence and as the victim stepped out of the house, the accused grabbed her and forced her back into his house where he assaulted and raped her," said police spokesperson, Captain Gerda Swart.

"The victim managed to get help from her friends, who took her home after the incident.

"She reported the incident to the South African Police Service in Kamesh."

Hendrickse was arrested on 28 November 2017 on a charge of rape.

The Acting Uitenhage Cluster Commander, Brigadier Ronald Koll, has welcomed the eight-year jail sentence that was handed down to Hendrickse by the Uitenhage Regional Court on Friday.

He said that: “The sentencing must serve as a deterrent for those who commit crimes against women and children”.

Brig Koll commended the investigating officer from the Uitenhage Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit, as well as the Uitenhage Regional Court for the effective sentencing that was handed down.
