Update on Buffalo City Municipality workers strike in King Williams Town

Public Order Police on Wednesday afternoon managed to disperse a crowd of protesting Buffalo City Municipality workers, who had blocked off some roads in the King Williams Town CBD.

According to police spokesperson, Captain Siphokazi Mawisa, the protesters were also throwing stones at the police vehicles.

In her latest update, she said that the Buffalo City Municipality Fire Brigade was not found to extinguish a fire started by the protesters.

"However, the police managed to extinguish the fire," she said.

"Police, together with local traffic police officers, are monitoring the situation, which is under control."

No arrests had been made yet.

'Buffalo City Municipality workers striking illegally'

Like in the East London CBD, the disruptions started on Tuesday when Buffalo City Municipality workers affiliated with the South African Municipal Workers' Union (SAMWU) downed tools and ended up disrupting business in King Williams Town.

Many businesses ended up shut their doors while residents were inconvenienced as the municipal strike turned violent.

Buffalo City Municipality Executive Mayor, Xola Pakati, apologised for the chaos and appealed to the protesters to exercise their rights within the law.

He also said that it is the Metro's understanding that the strike is actually illegal as no dispute has been declared by the union against the municipality.
