UPDATE on Port Elizabeth police investigation into 'animal cruelty' case

Walmer police on Thursday said that they have finalised their investigation into an animal cruelty case opened on Wednesday by a local social media user.

According to police information, on Wednesday, a picture of a dog hanging out of a vehicle was posted on Facebook.

"This picture went viral and a person viewing this picture went to Walmer police and opened a case of animal cruelty," said police spokesperson, Col Priscilla Naidu.

"The alleged suspect went to Walmer police station and a statement was obtained from him explaining the circumstances."

On Thursday, the person, who posted the picture on Facebook also reported to the police station. He alleged that while driving in Mohammed Desai Road in Fairview, Port Elizabeth, he saw a dog dangling out of the window of the driver’s side of a car.

"He managed to drive alongside the driver and enquired what was happening. The driver alleged that the dog jumped through the open window," Col Naidu said.

"He advised the driver to put the dog in the back of the car of which the owner obliged. There was another dog in the car.

"The owner of the dog alleged that the dog had escaped from his house and his children had called him. That’s when he went looking for the dog."

He apparently found the dog not far from his house. It was about 100metres from his house when the dog jumped out the window and he only managed to grab it by the legs and that’s when the person travelling behind him stopped him and enquired what was going on.

"The dog was then placed in the back of the car," she said.

"No one has been charged and the docket was sent to the Senior Public Prosecutor for a decision."
