UPDATE: Three arrested over Kirkwood protest violence

Police in Kirkwood on Wednesday said that they have opened a case of damaging or tampering with essential infrastructure for investigation.

"Three suspects, aged between 22 and 30 years, have been arrested," described police spokesperson, Sergeant Majola Nkohli.

The arrests come after the violence witnessed in the Kirkwood area following an impasse between employers and farm workers over wage increases.

On Tuesday, at around 18:00, it is alleged that a group of about 200 workers blocked route R336 extension leading to Moses Mabhida area, Kirkwood with stones and burning tyres.

Sgt Nkohli added that it is said that the group thereafter dispersed.

"Police later received reports of attacks on orchards in the area. At this stage, no case dockets have been opened, but at least one confirmed orchard store was set alight," he described.

"Three tractors were also torched. Currently, the situation is under control and being monitored by different policing units."

SAPS Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Liziwe Ntshinga, issued a stern warning to protesters.

"We view these actions as opportunistic criminal elements that are going to be dealt with harshly."

There is high police presence in the area.
