UPDATED: Eskom implements Stage 2 rotational load shedding

Eskom has since said it decided to implement Stage 2 load shedding on Friday morning.

Power utility, Eskom, on Friday advised businesses and residents that there is a high probability of it resorting to implementing Stage 2 load shedding from 09:00 until 22:00 as a result of loss of additional units overnight.

"Stage 2 calls for 2000MW to be rotationally loadshed nationally at a given period. Loadshedding is conducted rotationally as a measure of last resort to protect the power system from a total collapse or blackout," Eskom said.

"We encourage residents and businesses to please use electricity sparingly to ease the demand of electricity. Please switch off geysers during the day as well as all non-essential lighting and electricity appliances to assist in reducing demand.

"Customers are advised to keep checking their loadshedding schedules on the Eskom or municipal website, and plan on the assumption that load shedding will take place."

Eskom says Stage 2 load shedding will be implemented if absolutely necessary

For Eskom customers, these schedules are available on the Eskom website (loadshedding.eskom.co.za). Eskom customers can also contact our customer contact centre at 0860 037 566.

Eskom said it will provide regular updates on the status of the power system through all the media platforms.

"Thank you to all South Africans for your co-operation and understanding."

On Thursday, Eskom was forced to implement Stage 1 loadshedding due to demand on the power system.
