Varsity College Port Elizabeth hosted on-campus Service Learning Showcase

Port Elizabeth - The IIE’s Varsity College Port Elizabeth School of Education (S.O.E) 4th Year IIE Bachelor of Education students recently hosted an on campus Service Learning Showcase, showcasing the community engagement projects students initiated throughout the year at various schools within the Nelson Mandela Bay.

Said Richelle Meistre School of Education Lecturer The IIE’s Varsity College Port Elizabeth: “The students were tasked with capturing their initiatives visually on an expo board.

"Not only did they show their hard work off to parents, principals and teachers, but they also addressed the 1st, 2nd and 3rd year School of Education students, preparing them for the journey ahead – the good, the bad, but most importantly the beauty of service learning.”

Said Zané Pauls “My team members (Rain van Staden and Kaitlin Young) were placed at Bonzai Primary School in Sydenham. We identified a need for reading materials in the school as they didn't have a library or extra reading resources to make use of.

"We started a book drive and made it our goal to establish a well-resourced, functioning library before we had to leave at the end of the 3rd term. Establishing the library was very timeconsuming and we did have a couple of challenges along the way, however, it was all so worth it.

"We were able to assist the school where resources were lacking, as well as bridge a learning gap. The entire experience was incredibly humbling and rewarding and all the hard work, long nights and lack of sleep definitely paid off."

Zané adds; "This initiative will instill a love for reading in the learners by encouraging them to read for fun. Reading evolves imagination, encourages concentration, teaches learners to listen and develops their vocabulary and language skills.

"Most importantly, reading allows learners to gain knowledge and understanding about a variety of topics. This library will also be placed where learners can do research for upcoming assignments or projects, as a number of non-fiction books are available for them to make use of as well."
