VIDEO: DF Malherbe beat Alex Road with last-gasp try, all EC 1st XV rugby results last weekend

In their annual derby encounter, DF Malherbe hosted Alexander Road High, which was a tightly-contested affair, but saw DF Malherbe pulling away in the dying seconds to win the game 14-10.

The match was a real see-saw showdown, with each team scoring in tandem throughout. The game was also a scrappy one, with each side in each other’s faces, but DF were first to break the ice when they showed some flair in a good line-break, before a superb inward offload sent their blindside flanker in for a try under the posts.

In response, Alex made good headway up the field with decent ball retention, before eventually settling on DF’s try line. A good unexpected inside pop from the flyhalf to a forward-runner in space, channelled the visitors for their first and only try right beside the posts. The scores were locked 7-7 at half-time.

With pressure mounting on either side to break away, in a game that saw little continuity, Alex eventually won a penalty about 45-metres out on the 10-metre line – which they excellently converted into a three points.

With the scores at 10-7 to Alex, DF were forced to play catch-up for the rest of the game, and to their credit, managed to execute when on the dying minutes were pressing on Alex’s line, only to create space out-wide, which gave way for their wing to score the winning try.

The conversion was also sent through between the uprights from the corner, which won the game for the home side.

In some first tier schools’ rugby encounters over the weekend, Grey High lost their first match in their 11th match of the season, against other Eastern Cape front-runners, St. Andrews College in Grahamstown – going down 41-36 in a high-scoring game.

St. Andrews have now beaten most major EC schools this year, including Queens College (45-22), Selborne College (26-5), Graeme College (25-10) and now Grey High. The only remaining EC threat that awaits St. Andrews is Dale College, who were ranked in the country’s top 20 last year.

Dale thrashed Kingswood College 36-5 over the weekend, and in a Nelson Mandela Bay rivalry, Hoërskool Framesby beat the recently inform Hoërskool Brandwag 19-15 in Uitenhage.

Framesby have now beaten three powerhouse schools on the trot since they returned from Japan where they represented South Africa at the Sanix World Youth Championship.
