VIDEO: Fedhealth XTERRA Triathlon brings delight to PE, top 10 FULL and LITE results

The Fedhealth XTERRA has in 2016 and now in 2017, acclaimed its new home in Port Elizabeth, as South Africa’s premier off-road triathlon – much suited for the Bay’s valleys and open-span beaches and ocean.

The swim took place in the King’s Beach sea, with the mountain-biking leg taking place in the Baakens Valley, while the trail run taking place in Happy Valley. The XTERRA triathlon constituted of three categories over the weekend namely, the FULL, LITE and KIDS.

The KIDS category started at 16:00 on Friday, 10th February, the FULL shot off on Saturday at 08:00 and the LITE honked off at 09:00 on Sunday.

The FULL required contestants to swim 1.5km, mountain-bike 28km and an end-off 12km trail run. Almost three times less effort on each leg, the LITE required competitors to swim 400m, mountain-bike 12km and finish up with a 6km trail run.

The race village was located on the Kings Beach offshore, while the race itself aimed to abstain as much as possible from the city and its roads – this made a single-lane trail difficult for over-taking, specifically the bicycling.

Therefore, technical and strategic planning needed to be acquired for overtaking slower riders in sort positions and planned overtakes.

102 contestants completed the FULL and 86 racers completed the LITE. Herewith the top 10 results for each:
