VIDEO: Southern Kings raise #FillOurStadium flag at Donkin Reserve

As part of a campaign by the Southern Kings and the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality to get local rugby fans to fill up the Nelson Mandela Stadium for the Kings’ upcoming match against the Cell C Sharks on Saturday, a giant #FillOurStadium flag was raised at the Donkin Reserve, in Central, Port Elizabeth.

The hoisting of the flag took place on Wednesday morning and was attended by the newly appointed Nelson Mandela Stadium manager, Mpho Mokonyana, and Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor, Athol Trollip.

“I think the initiative to fill the stadium is an extraordinary initiative, because I think it is the best stadium in South Africa.

“It’s intimate, beautifully built, an awesome piece of architecture and it’s ours. That’s what makes it really extraordinary,” said Trollip.

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is making several efforts to try and keep the stadium, which was built for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, financially viable. This has included having ABSA Premiership soccer club, Chippa United, use it for their home matches as well as having the Southern Kings use it as their home base so as to attract high profile events that attract capacity crowds.

“This weekend is a big game for us and we want to fill our stadium. We want to encourage every single person, who supports rugby to come out there,” he said.

“There are 45 000 seats, we want to fill that stadium and show people that we are very keen about retaining a professional franchise in the Eastern Cape and in Nelson Mandela Bay.”

He said that he was positive about the turnout on Saturday.

“I’m looking forward to the match on the weekend, I can’t wait!” said the Mayor.
