St. Andrews College to date has waved Eastern Cape’s flag as the province’s best representing 1st XV rugby school, and had on Saturday against fellow Grahamstown rivals, Kingswood College, polished the first half of their season off with flying colours.

With most schools currently breaking over the June exam period, nothing prevented these two schools from taking to the field to blow off some steam, but to St. Andrews’ credit, it showed to be a relatively lob-sided derby day in terms of results.

Heading into the match, St. Andrews had won eight matches out of 10 this season so far and seven in a row, including recent victories over other EC powerhouses, Grey High  (41-36), Selborne College (26-5), Queens College (45-22) and Graeme College (25-10). Their only losses of the season came against Cape Town’s Bishops and SACS in the beginning of the season.

On Saturday, St. Andrews butchered Kingswood 72-5, which now takes their win tally to nine wins out of 11 with eight consecutive victories.

To back their 1st XV up, St. Andrews’ 2nd XV won 22-7, U16A’s won 39-17, U15A’s won 28-5, but their U14A’s slumped 54-12.

St. Andrews are currently the highest ranked 1st XV rugby school in EC, and 14th in the country. Grey High are breathing down their necks, ranked in at 15th in the country. Dale College, who edged Grey High 28-27 two weeks ago, still have yet to face St. Andrews, in what will be a much-anticipated EC schools’ rugby tussle.

In other EC schools’ 1st XV results over the weekend, East London’s Hudson Park beat Grens 26-12, while in another Border clash; Dale College thrashed Cambridge High 47-7.
