Volkswagen up! now in South Africa

Volkswagen’s much vaunted up! city car is now available in South Africa having gone on sale in Europe in 2012. Slotting in below the locally made Polo Vivo, the Slovakian built up! will only be available as a three door, and can be had in two models using the same engine and transmission combination.

Like its European counterpart, the South African spec up! is powered by a 1.0-litre three cylinder petrol engine that makes 55 kW and 90 N.m of torque (a lesser powered 44 kW model will not be offered). Power is directed through the front wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox. Top speed is a claimed 171 km/h while the 0-100 km/h sprint takes 13.2 seconds. Volkswagen claims a combined fuel consumption figure of a diesel rivalling 4.7 L/100 km with CO2 emission below the 120g/km threshold at 108g/km.

Model-wise, and in line with the nomenclature used in Europe, the up! range will consist out the base Take up! and mid-spec Move up!. There is now word yet as to whether range topping High up! will become available locally.

Standard items on the Take up! includes air-conditioning, daytime running lights, radio prep with two speakers, central locking, 14-inch steel wheels, ABS and dual airbags. Building on this, the Move up! adds a factory fitted MP3 compatible sound system with CD/USB, electric and heated door mirrors, height adjustable driver’s seat, electric windows, four airbags, colour coded doors, mirrors and bumper and a 60/40 split rear seats. A three year / 120 000 km warranty is standard on both models.
