A 23-year-old Walter Sisulu University student, Siyavumela Mdzamela, was on Monday arrested for the murder of another student, 23-year-old Aphelele Tobongwana in Southernwood, in East London, on Sunday afternoon.

According to East London police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Hazel Mqala, students were drinking in room 10 at the Walter Sisulu University residence in Wayne Street, Southernwood, in East London, when an argument broke out between Tobongwana and Mdzamela.

It is alleged that Mdzamela then stabbed Tobongwana in the chest. Tobongwana was rushed to Frere Hospital where he died.

“His body was moved to Woodbrook Mortuary and the family has been informed,” said Warrant officer Mqala.

She added that a case of murder was opened at the East London police station leading to Mdzamela.

The suspect will appear in court soon facing a charge of murder.
