Wanted murderer among suspects arrested by Walmer police in early morning raids

Walmer police in Port Elizabeth on Thursday made a breakthrough and arrested a wanted suspect for a house robbery that left a 68-year-old man dead as well as for other murders in the Walmer area.

The suspect is among three suspects, aged between 19 and 26, who were arrested in early morning raids where suspected stolen property was also recovered.

"Working together as a team can only have positive results. The recovery of the stolen goods and the arrest of suspects have a direct impact on crime and members are committed to address the crime in Walmer," described police spokesperson, Capt Sandra Janse Van Rensburg.

"During an early hours suspect raiding operation on Thursday morning, at 03:00, members from Walmer Police Station raided a few houses in the Walmer Location and Airport valley."

She said that at one of the houses, the members arrested three suspects and recovered suspected stolen property.

"The one suspect, aged 23, was arrested on an warrant of arrests after he failed to appear in court on an illegal possession of firearm case," Capt Janse Van Rensburg described.

"This suspect was also linked through fingerprints to a house robbery that was reported on the 7th of November 2018 in Villiers Road, Walmer, where a 68-year-old man, Deepak Mamtani, was badly assaulted and passed away in hospital due to the injuries he sustained during the robbery."

Suspect was also wanted by Walmer police for other murders

She said that this suspect is also linked to other murders within the Walmer location area.

"The second suspect, aged 19, is linked to robberies within the Walmer area and the third suspect, aged 26, was arrested on charges of possession of suspected stolen property," Capt Janse Van Rensburg added.

She said that the property recovered inlcuded cellphones, TV's, computer screens, DVD's and laptops.

"The members also recovered mandrax tablets. At the moment, the members are busy processing the property to establish if they could be linked to other cases reported within Walmer area," Capt Janse Van Rensburg added.

"They will also see if the suspects arrested could possibly be linked to other crimes within Port Elizabeth. All three suspect will appear at New Law Courts Magistrate court on Monday."

Mount Road SAPS Cluster Commander, Maj Gen Thembisile Patekile, commended the commitment and dedication of the members.

"Action such as this shows that our members are committed to rendering a service to the community of Walmer."
