Warriors to unleash on-loan Shamsi ahead of Cobras Sunfoil Series clash

Proteas specialist spinner, Tabraiz Shamsi, has joined the Warriors on loan from the Titans for their home Sunfoil Series clash against the Cape Cobras at St. Georges Park, beginning on Thursday (10:00).

Shamsi, who has played five ODIs, two T20s and one Test match for the Proteas in his infant international career, last outed on the cricket field for T20 Caribbean Premier League (CPL) outfit, St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots, earlier in September, and will now adjust his services to the longer format of the game for the Warriors.

After being restricted by time in their first Sunfoil Series clash against the Lions at the Wanderers Stadium last week, the addition of Shamsi will most likely bolster the bowling attacks for the Eastern Cape side.

Their encouraging start at the crease, saw the Warriors amass a total 702 runs over the two innings, with captain JJ Smuts scoring a combined 175 runs and Edward Moore 129. David White scored 94 in the first innings, while retiring hurt in the second, and Clyde Fortuin and Lesiba Ngoepe both scored half-centuries in either innings.

Sisanda Magala, Andrew Birch and Anrich Nortje also impressed with the ball, and Shamsi’s service will further flavour the Warriors onslaught ahead of their first official home game of the 2017/18 season. Warriors coach, Malibongwe Maketa, hopes to build onto the ascendency they gained last week.

“It was a great start for us in terms of the positives, especially on what we produced last season. We've been calling out for guys to score hundreds and they did that in Jo'burg." Maketa told Cricket South Africa.

"I was also pleased with the bowlers, who delivered in partnerships which helped us create pressure.”

“We always enjoy the challenge of playing against a strong franchise like the Cobras and it will be great if we can go on and deliver against them,” he added.

South African U19 star, who matriculated at Grey High School last year, Matthew Breetzke, has also been a new inclusion in the squad since last week.

For the Cobras, both Hashim Amla and Temba Bavuma will miss the clash due to Proteas’ commitment, as they begin their five-day Test against Bangladesh at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom also today.
