The Port Elizabeth High Court erupted with shouts of joy when Judge Dalayin Chetty sentenced convicted wife murderer Christopher Panayiotou to life imprisonment on Friday.

Judge Chetty, over two weeks ago, found Panayiotou and co-accused, Zolani Sibeko and Sinethemba Nenembe, guilty of orchestrating the kidnapping and subsequent murder of the former Port Elizabeth businessman’s wife, Jayde, in April 2015.

Panayiotou and Nenembe were handed life sentences for their part in Jayde’s murder, while Sibeko was handed 15 years imprisonment for conspiracy to murder. Nenembe also got an additional 15 years for conspiracy to commit murder – which means he got the worst sentence of the three men.

As Judge Chetty read out the sentences, Jayde’s family were visibly overjoyed, as were members of the gallery, who applauded the judge’s decision.

Tshepo Ndwalaza, Regional Spokesperson of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), said that they were very happy with the sentence handed down by the judge.

“We are really excited about what happened today. We know now that this will bring closure to the family of Jayde and a lot of people who have been watching this case very closely. We believe that our prosecutors and the investigating team have done a lot of work and now we can sleep well,” said Ndwalaza.

After the sentencing was handed down, Defence Advocate Terry Price, stated that they would appeal the sentencing at a later date.

Many also took to social media to applaud the court for the sentences:
