WATCH VIDEO: DA says will go to court after Sheriff attacked

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Nelson Mandela Bay said that it will be approaching the courts after a Sheriff of the High Court was apparently attacked party members and Councillors.

The incident happened at a tense special Council Meeting that was held in Despatch on Friday

According to DA Eastern Cape Leader, Nqaba Bhanga, they are going to court to complain about the incident.

He said that the Sheriff was at the Council Meeting to serve papers to two Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality councillors, who are no longer members of the DA, Cllrs Trevor Louw and Neville Higgins.

However, an altercation broke out involving party members, council members and the Sheriff.

The altercation apparently started when the Councillors from the ruling African National Congress (ANC)-led coalition demanded to know from the Sheriff if the two councillors didn't have homes that he would serve papers in a Council Meeting.

However, Bhanga came to the defence of the Sheriff saying that he was doing his job and he must be allowed to do so.

While speaking to the media, Bhanga said that the two Cllrs are confused because they sit with the ANC while they say that their membership is with the DA.

"What was disappointing is that a Speaker of the Council denied the Sheriff of the Court a chance to do his job as instructed by the Court.

"Therefore, we are writing to the Magistrate's to complain about the actions of the Speaker and Mr [Andile] Lungisa," Bhanga said.

Bhanga alleged that Lungisa manhandled him while refusing to let the Sheriff enter the Council Chambers to do his job.

The Council Meeting was adjourned...
