Weather forecast for 2019 Standard Bank IRONMAN African Championship

Relatively good weather expected for 2019 Standard Bank IRONMAN African Championship

Port Elizabeth - The hundreds of athelets, who have descended on the Nelson Mandela Bay, and the thousands of spectators expected to throng the Summerstrand beachfront for the 2019 Standard Bank IRONMAN African Championship, will be relieved to know that the Port Elizabeth office of the SA Weather Service is predicting a mostly sunny and clear day on Sunday.

On Saturday, however,  the Kids' IRONMAN contestants will have to battle it out under mostly cloudy skies.

The weather will start clearing on Saturday afternoon as the IRONMAN competitors put the final touches to their preparations.

The weather office is expected to provide regular updates towards the day of the IRONMAN championship.

Athletes from all over South Africa, as well as international athletes from more than 40 different countries have already entered to participate in the 2019 Standard Bank IRONMAN African Championship in Nelson Mandela Bay.

Among them is 34-year-old amputee and former Nyaope (a street drug in South Africa) user, Xolani Luvuno, whose story has captured the hearts of the nation.

New route for Standard Bank IRONMAN African Championship 2019

For the upcoming event in Nelson Mandela Bay athletes can look forward to a different course. The swim will remain the same at the Shark Rock Pier on Hobie Beach. The change comes in with the bike and run sections of the race.

For the bike, athletes will head out Marine Drive and up onto Sardinia Bay Road, turn onto Heron Road and head to Seaview. They will turn around before they get to Thunzi Bush Lodge entrance and head back along the M9 onto Seaview Road.

The bike course then takes them through the city where they will be more sheltered from the wind, before going for a second loop. The new course is more picturesque as the Maitlands area will form a greater part of the course.

The run section has also slightly changed, moving the course along Driftsands Drive. This takes away 2 km of ‘dead space’ and allows for more spectators to cheer the IRONMAN athletes on.
