Weekend crime prevention operations net over 350 suspects in Uitenhage

Several successful operations that were conducted over the past weekend resulted in a total of 354 suspects being arrested for various crimes in the Uitenhage Cluster, police said. 

"These arrests included murder, assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm, shoplifting, house breaking and theft and the possession of suspected stolen goods. 23 persons were arrested for driving under the influence of liquor," said police spokesperson, Captain Gerda Swart. 

"A total of 91 traffic fines were issued, valued at more than R45 500.  The suspects were also arrested on charges relating to sexual assault, contravention of a protection order and 33 suspects were detained for the illegal possession of drugs."    

She said that police in the Uitenhage Cluster will continue to combat crime effectively in the Uitenhage Cluster. 

"The South African Police Service appeal to the community to work with the SAPS in reducing crime by providing valuable information that will lead to the arrest of suspects, the tracing of illegal firearms and the recovery of stolen property.
