Wild Coast fun: The family friendly Morgan Bay Hotel

Wild Coast fun: The family friendly Morgan Bay Hotel

We are really spoilt for choice when it comes to beach holidays in the Eastern Cape, but it is always the Wild Coast that draws me in the colder months. This magnificent coastline is washed by the warm waters of the Mozambique current, creating a temperate climate even in winter.

The Morgan Bay Hotel, nestled between a mile of unspoilt beach and breath-taking cliffs, is accessible by a tarred road, and being just a 45 minute by car from East London, is a comfortable drive away.

The hotel exudes an atmosphere of relaxation – the beachy colours, wooden decks and friendly staff together with the magnificent view and crushing sound of the waves simply releases urban stress in a matter of minutes.

This year, the Morgan Bay Hotel also celebrates their 70th anniversary. Perhaps what makes this hotel such a wonderful holiday destination is that it is family owned and managed and the current owners, Richard and Jackie Warren Smith, are the third generation to run the hotel.

Richard says “There are so many things to keep you entertained in Morgan Bay! We have an unspoilt beach with high dunes, which offers many hours of fun for the kids with sand boarding, sand castle building, horse riding, beach sports and swimming.”

He adds, “Our majestic cliffs are criss-crossed by hiking and mountain bike trails, and you can go rock climbing and abseiling with Rockfacelabs. The tranquil Inchara River estuary is great for canoeing and fishing with the kids.”

As if this is not enough, within a 15 km radius of Morgan Bay, one can enjoy a game reserve, a golf course, township tours and a tranquil coastal nature reserve, where you can hunt for Ming dynasty porcelain, money cowries and Carnelian beads from a 16th century Portuguese shipwreck.

Like all great resorts, the Morgan Bay Hotel has a great dining room that is tastefully decorated and the tables topped with white linen and sparkling cutlery.  The food is excellent and the menu caters for all manner of tastes.

An evening at their ala carte restaurant, The Deck, and bar with a long, cold one in hand is the perfect way to end a day of adventure.

You will struggle to find a more breath-taking view from a spa in the Eastern Cape, than what you will find at the Milkwood Spa who offer a fantastic range of massage and beauty treatments, as well as a sauna and jacuzzi.

In short, the Morgan Bay Hotel would be an excellent choice for a family holiday.  See you there!
