Willowvale man accused of raping 72-year-old woman remanded in custody

A 36-year-old Willowvale man, who cannot be named until he has pleaded to a charge of raping a 72-year-old woman, appeared before the Willowvale Magistrate's Court on Monday.

"The accused was denied bail and he will appear before the Willowvale Magistrate's Court again on Monday 08 January 2018," described police spokesperson, Captain Jackson Manatha.

"The case was remanded for further investigation. He remained in custody."

It is alleged that the victim was alone at her home on Saturday, at about 02:00am, when the suspect allegedly forcefully opened the door to her home at Ntubeni Village, Willowvale.

According to Captain Manatha, it is further alleged that the suspect accosted and raped the victim.

"He then left the scene of crime. The victim managed to identify the suspect.

"Community members, who heard the victim screaming came in numbers," he said.

"Community members looked for the suspect and found him.

"Police were called and they arrested him."
