Winter break: Explore East London and its surrounds from Blue Lagoon Hotel

Winters on the South African coast can be unpredictably cold and wet. But it’s also true that it’s a season with so much to see, do and eat that you will still enjoy a wonderful family or romantic holiday. Why hide away, at a time when hotels, restaurants and attractions offer exceptional deals - plus the advantage of fewer tourists and less traffic etc?

Fabled as one of East London’s top accommodation and conferencing venues, the Blue Lagoon Hotel and Conference Centre is where you should be heading if you are planning to take advantage of this winter season to explore what the city and its surrounds have to offer.

Situated on the Nahoon River mouth and facing the famous Nahoon Reef, the hotel is within 10 minutes of the city’s CBD and 20 minutes from the airport – thus offering total tranquillity and seclusion, but with ease of access to the conveniences of a metropolis.

Blue Lagoon Hotel comprises of 36 Luxury Suites, which face the Nahoon River as well as 67 Standard Rooms, which face its beautiful gardens.

The river-facing suites offer two bedrooms – one double room with a queen-size bed; a lounge and dining area; a fully-equipped self-catering kitchen; shower and bath; a balcony; tea/coffee facilities; TV and full DSTV; a home theatre system; air conditioning; 24-hour room and front-desk service, 24-hour security; Wi-Fi internet access and a babysitting service upon request. The Standard Rooms offer most of the above but in a single room.

For ladies holidaying alone, Blue Lagoon Hotel offers a high security ‘ladies floor’ where only ladies can stay. Outside, there is ample and secure parking.

Besides several onsite activities, the hotel is within reach of the city’s major entertainment attractions as well as activities like beach hikes, horse trails and forest walks. Game drives at local reserves can be arranged on request.

Excellent meals can be enjoyed at its Highlander Restaurant, which has an “enviable reputation of excellent wines, food that roars with flavour and service that whispers”. They offer indulgent English Breakfasts, light lunches and daily specials, which can be enjoyed in the restaurant or on their wooden deck, overlooking the Nahoon River mouth and the Indian Ocean beyond.

Dinners are always an occasion and you can enjoy full à la carte menus and their midweek buffet spreads.

Live music and cocktails can be enjoyed at the atmospheric Highlander Pub every Wednesday and Friday evening while their ‘Upstairs on Blue’ is an upmarket cocktail lounge that is tastefully-decorated for discerning patrons.
