A 23-year-old woman from Butterworth, Nomfundiso Goniwe, was early this month sentenced to undergo five years imprisonment after she was convicted in an arson and culpable homicide case that left an elderly woman and a toddler dead.

"The accused was sentenced on Friday 10 February 2017. It is alleged that the accused had a misunderstanding with her boyfriend," said police spokesperson, Captain Jackson Manatha.

"The accused went to the shack of her boyfriend on 28 November 2014, during the night, at Manxiweni Location, Zazulwana Extension, Butterworth.

"She set alight the shack thinking that her boyfriend was inside the shack. However, there were two people inside the shack, namely 59-year-old Nomalungisa Dyam and two-year old Olwethu Qwede."

The two were burnt and died inside the shack.

"The boyfriend was not in the shack.

"Initially the accused was charged with murder and arson," said Captain Manatha.

"She was found guilty of culpable homicide and arson.
